Help a Noob out!

I'm pretty sure some people have asked these questions but i tried to find it and i can't so i hope you guys would help!
And this is my problem i dunno how to use the codes and stuff i know how in game you hold select for 3 or more seconds and the thing pops up but what do i do? in the web page it old show this

download the db if you have an old one, then use the select cheat menu to enable the cheats.

thanks i enabled the cheats but it dun do anything do i have to do it b4 i load my game or somethign?

you have to enable even the master cheat trigger on the main menu. plus some cheats may be wrong as they are community submitted
