How to install when psp will not load recovery window

This is driving me nuts. Is there way to auto load the recovery screen? I'm using the original psp with software update 3.71. Memory crd is Sandisk 1.0 gb I have copied the seplugins folder to my root but the recovery window will not load for me to install.

first are you using custom firmware? No hope without that.
